Why your contractor website isn’t getting you jobs (and what actually works)

A contractor website has exactly one job: turn a homeowner comparing three companies into a booked site visit. Most sites never got told that.

The comparison moment is the whole game

Here’s how a big job actually gets awarded. A homeowner decides to do the patio, the deck, the roof. They search, they open three or four company websites in tabs, and they form a gut feeling about each one in under ten seconds. Then they call one or two. Your website’s job is to win that gut feeling. Everything else is decoration.

We know because we live it. Our own landscaping company, Golden Maple, wins and loses those comparison moments every week in Ontario. The website patterns we sell at Trovedge are the ones that survived that reality — not templates a designer thought looked nice.

What loses the comparison

  • -Stock photos. Homeowners can smell them, and they read as "this company has no work to show."
  • -Walls of text about "quality and integrity." Every competitor says it, so it says nothing.
  • -No prices, no ranges, no guidance — which reads as "expensive and evasive."
  • -A contact form that looks like it goes nowhere, with no phone number in sight.
  • -A site that takes six seconds to load on a phone. They’re on a phone.

What wins it

  • -Your real projects, photographed decently and organized by job type — proof beats prose.
  • -Honest ranges. "Most of our patios land between X and Y" filters tire-kickers and builds trust in one line.
  • -Tap-to-call and a short quote form above the fold. Two paths, both obvious.
  • -A page per service and per town you work — that’s how you show up in more searches AND look established.
  • -Speed. Sub-two-seconds on a phone, because that’s where the comparison happens.

The part nobody talks about: what happens after the click

A site that generates inquiries you don’t answer is a lead generator for your competitors — homeowners who don’t hear back call the next company. That’s why we treat the website and lead handling as one system: form fills and calls get answered immediately, around the clock, and estimates get booked while you’re still on the tools. The site starts the job; the response wins it.
